Advert Design Ideas

This is a practice design for the advert that will be made to advertise the artist and their new song/album, the advert clearly show the artist face as there is a n close up of just the face in the centre of the page, this will draw the attention to it making it obvious tot he audience who this advert is for, as for bug artist their face is all they need to advertise or present their work. the name of the album is writing down the side an at the bottom will be the record company logo and any other logo's required to present on a advert. The hanging paper cranes will be in the front focus and will be the first thing that the audience will view just before seeing the artist face located just in the layer behind. The colours for this will feature mainly blue and black as these are colours that are hugely related to our genre, also they create the good mix of feeling that the song creates.

Track Permission

This was the email sent to the record company to allow the use of their song in our video. The company we had to ask was Atlantic Records as they have the rights for Ed Sheeran song Little Bird.

Talent release form

This is form that we filled out to get permission from the talent in order to film and use their music.

CD Design Idea

Here is a design idea for my CD cover, this shows all sides of the cover with the chosen colours, throughout the design the background will be a mix of white and blue, blue is a colour that is well established within my chosen genre, on the front cover I have chosen to show the artist as the purpose of this is to advertise and promote the artist's CD, in the inside there will be images of instruments used in the genre.

Location shoot

In our video we will include a variety of different locations to help present our concept of the song, we have chosen to do around 3-5 locations to shoot in, this allows us to gather enough footage to create a successful music video.
Streets
Here we will have the artist walking down an empty street with houses is the background as he walks down the street, This setting creates the space that is described in Th lyrics and the distance that is described between the artist and the person he is signing about.

Dark Room/Performing room
These two sets will be created by my group in a drama room, like all music videos there are shoots of the artist performing on a stage or room, we have chosen to create a room with simply just a stall which he will sit on and perform, in this room will be hanging origami birds made from paper, these will relate to the song and by having them surround the artist will create the perfect atmosphere, at one point these will drop in slow motion. Another set we will create within the drama room where we have the artist creating these birds on a table with a single light source coming from a lamp, this will create the necessary mood in the video to show the feelings of the artist, with both set's the background will be black to make the full focus on the artist.

Conservatory
Here we will have the artist performing with the area filled with origami birds, this will show the artist sitting in front of the open door with the birds blowing out, again relating to distance and the lyrics.

Animatic

This is my groups animatic where we have put the correct shots in the order they should be in the real video, we added the music also to it.

Storyboard

Here is a page from my storyboard, me and my group have created these storyboard in order to have an view of what our video will look like. We have written a short description with every shot to give an idea of the concept behind it, after we have written and drawn all our storyboards we will cut out each individual shot and then start to order them together so that we can plan the actual video.

This is a short video showing all of the storyboards that we have created. Also underneath a video of our group creating the storyboards by hand.

This is a animatic that my group has created, we used the storyboard pictures that we created and then individually select each shot and started to put them in order, once we had put all of the images into final-cut we imported the song, once the song was imported we could start to insert the clips in the order that they will be in for the real video, we have tried to time each shot to the most appropriate length as we want to get a fill for what the real thing will be like if that shot lasts that long.

Concept

The Concept
My group has decided to use Little Bird by Ed Sheeran for our chosen song; this song fits right into our genre and was performed by an artist which is known for that genre. The song itself has a couple of metaphors involved and also some emotive stories of him and another person or object. The main metaphor we have extracted is that there is a metaphor of distance and loss form another person, however we feel that we can somehow show this through different techniques rather than from the common videos with someone being sad and signing his emotion, we want to get away from that traditional convention and try to create a more detailed concept. To do this my group will have to try and prevent ourselves form doing too much of a narrative and maybe follow from Goodwin’s theory of illustrating the concept instead.
Location
My group have gathered information from our previous research and help come up with possible locations for shooting in, as this is a music video we are trying to have more of a montage then contuinity within it, so in order to achieve this we will have to come up with multiple locations to film in therefore having the option to mix up the clips more freely. 1. The first location type we have considered is the streets, as we want to create a meaning within the video and having a sense normality within it will help connect to the audience, also by having a mix of busy or empty streets can really help to set the mood within the shot to portray the feeling within the song.
2. Recording studio is another location that we thinking of filming in, this is to have a mix of performance shots and also some very small narrative/concept shots, the performance shots will help to have a balance and to have breaks between shots like in other music videos. Also we are trying to show a professional artist so this will help present them more professionally and give them the focus form the audience on their talent.
3. The group has discussed the possibility of having a room with very low key lighting and to have many probs and objects to relate to the concept of a song, it is important when doing this to not create a traditional room where the person is seen crying and being sorry for themselves.
4. Another location choice would be an open space where the artist will be seen away from civilisation, this would be done to show the distance concept form the lyrics and song, however this will be a difficult location to so as first we would have to find this type of location then secondly being able to make it interesting would be another thing, as there are no surrounding objects to relate the concept making 100% of the focus on the artist body motion alone.
Costumes
From my research I have found the conventions within my genre and been able to choose what clothing my group must use when making the video, the artist is the main focus of the whole video so it is important to portray them in the right clothing and give out the right attitude. One costume choose will be a combination of smart clothing in chino's and a shirt, with boat shoes, these clothes are very casual meaning that the audience will be able to connect with the artist, also we will be following the conventions which we found from our research. The second costume will be jeans and a hoodie with an indie t-shirt, again following the convention but the reason for this is because they are not trying to show off to anyone but only to perform their music and send out a message the audience, this will defiantly help to connect with the audience. The last costume will be very smart but in a more folk way, with a bowtie and blazer, this is relating to bands such as Mumford and sons who are a main artist within our genre of folk rock. This will finalise the artist look as they will see the money side and know that he is a famous artist who everyone listen to.
Effects
Within our genre there are not many noticeable special effects used, as there are not many artist trying to show bright flashing effects to look pretty, the main focus on effect is to help build an concept with the video to relate to the song. 1. Slow motion is the most used effect within all music videos, however within our genre It has appeared in every video and helps set the tone of the song. 2. Colour filters are another traditional effect used in the genre of folk rock, they are used a lot to show the emotion or feelings that the artist has at that specific moment in the song.

Here are a collection of images which show the costume choices we must consider when making our music video, Within our genre the clothing is a mix between casual and then really dramatic folk like Mumford and sons, another feature our genre has are little extra's like bracelets or a bow-tie, chino's and jeans are the primary type of clothing along with hoodies like the artist Ed Sheeran.

Song Lyric's analysis

These are the lyrics to my chosen song of "Little Bird" by Ed Sheeran, We have added comments relating to what we possible could show during that part of the lyrics and also the meaning of them lyrics so we can get a understanding of the narrative that has to be shown in the video.

Song Details

This is my groups brainstorm of details that we are to include when making our music video, the song that we have chosen is "Little Bird" by Ed Sheeran, the reason we have choosing this was that it fits perfectly into our genre of folk rock, this video shows all the details that we need to include like location or costume, also the variety of shot types. One of the main reasons we picked this song was due to that the other choices where all slow paced meaning it would be harder to make a music video, as more emphasis would have to be done on mis en scene rather then editing.

Photoshop Technique's

Here is a screenomatic explaining  a technique i used in Adobe Photoshop so that I could practice for when making my own CD cover,  In this video it will show how to blur a picture and then how to clear  a selected area that it will stand out form the rest of the blurred image, also on how to make colour changes such as brightness and contras to the image.
Here is an design that my group created as a practice o Photoshop, we used various tools such as the crop tool or the lasso tool, We added text and also the record company logo which would feature on any real CD cover.

Green screen Practise

This is our  task of practising using the green screen, to do this we first had to set up the green screen and then filmed the required footage over the green cover. Once we filmed the footage we uploaded the clips to final cut, then We added the filter of Chroma Key to the layers of clips, once I added the filter I had to select the colours that I wanted to remove which was green, once we selected a moderate amount of green from the clip, I then modified the filter to correct the image and try to find the right balance where the green is removed.

Initial Ideas

This mind map shows all the initial ideas we had when the group first talked, we officially decided that the chosen genre of Folk Rock and then we expanded on that chosen genre with clothes and locations.

Roles

This video is a short clip Saying which main roles that our group has taken:
Location(Jessica): It is Jessica's role to organize the locations which we will be filming in and to book if it is necessary to use a room or location.
Costume/Mack up(Jessica): This role involves the person to finalise and decide what costumes any minor or major role is to wear.
Filming(All Group members): This role involves taking charge of the camera and filming set shots, all members will be taking turns in filming so that we all have equal turns.
Editing(All Group members): This role will be spread out between the group so that we all choice equal amount of work whilst editing.
Character Roles: I shall be the main artist of the band or single artist. Minor roles will be done by Shaun and Jessica.
Casting(James):I shall be in charge of casting other role that are minor or extra's.
Directing(All Group Members): all members of the group will take it in turns to direct separate clips.
Mise-en-Scene(Shaun): This roles involves collecting objects and probs that will be in the video.
Lighting(James): To do this role I must create the right amount of lighting for each scene.
Research(Shaun): In order to do this role I they must research the lyrics and artists trends like clothes.

Audience Research 2

Here is the first table which show the results from the question of male or female, it seems that more where female then male, this may be due to the audience that we picked to do the survey but this could also suggest that we should perhaps aim towards more of the female sex then the male audience.
This pie chart shows what age range that we are targeting for, the results show that our main area to target for is the 17-19, this however can be quite unreliable as we asked the survey to many of our friends which will obviously be in that age range but still from the results that we gathered in other questions I think this is still the right age to target.
This bar chart clearly shows me that our age and gender classes have actually gone towards the genre for which we are doing, this helps our group as we can easily collect feedback from these people as we work with them everyday.
The top diagram shows me the type of clothing that the audience would like to see in a folk rock video, as expected the class of indie/folk was chosen as the chinos or jeans clothing are so well associated with our genre of folk rock. The bottom diagram shows the type of shots that they would like to see in a folk rock video, close ups are a real trend in this genre and also are long shots, this gives us a real path and target to aim for.
Overall the perfect profile of our target audience is preferable a female between the age of 17-19. Also from the feedback I have realised that we will have to wear clothing like jeans or chinos as these are the type of cloths associated with that genre, also another question we asked was what effects would they want to see, the often occurrence was slow-motions like in may music videos so these is a vital convention that we must do.

Audience Research

Here is my survey that my group created to collect information from our audience to know what they expect from a music video, and more specific from our chosen genre of folk rock.I created this survey in Google docs and then sent out the link to over 20 people, this should allow me to get a great understanding of what our target audience want, the advantage of using Google docs is that I will be able to make tables and charts form the data collected so that I have a visual aspect of my results and not just digits.

Advertisement Research

In this advert we can see all of the band members all alocated to their separate box with their chosen intrument, the reason that I think this was done is that the band is still trying to get their faces out to the public and by presenting them like this helps the audience to put the face to the band. The genre of this band is primarly folk which helps me to see the key conventions of that genre, for example there are very few bright colours and only black was used for the background, this keeps it very simple and pulls the focus to entirely to the band and not any fancy artwork done in the background. Also the titles of the band and album are in plain white and in bold clear lettering which is easy to read. At the bottom you can see the record compnay of Island with there logo of the tropical tree. The shapes used are all straight edged boxes with the band in them, this could relate again to the abstract theme that was seen in the CD covers. another aspect pf this advert is that the overall look of it is very retro and old fashioned, as it is very similar to an old album cover with the corner folds to hold the photo's in place, this is relating again tp the genre and theme of folk rock, as folk music originates from quite an olden time and is considered an old genre whereas pop and rock are more modern.
This advert is of Biffy Cylro who are more of a rock band but still could class as indie, this advert is much more colourful and more abstract than the first, abstract and miscelleanous objects seem to be a often convention used in our chosen genre of folk/rock or indie which is something that my group must take to mind when making our video adn adverts for our own music video. The titles are all in plain white/Light blue colours and also the font used is very plain and original where the band name and album are shown again. In this advert the the band members arn't even in it amd instead we have two lions fighting which has no releavance to the song or band again with the miscelleanous objects or animals. The colours used are more bright and blue seem to be a very strong theme in this advert, unlike the first advert there are no real object that they want the audience to focus on so there is no need for a plain one colour shade background. At the bottom you can see the record label again which is 14th Floor who are in venture with warner music. Again the overall look of this advertisement is very retro but not in the same way as the Mumford And Sons advertisement, the texture of the colours are very fuzzy and represent older time periods, also the font helps to back this point up as it is very bold and reminds me of the world war poster used to recruit where the letters where made to stand out form the page and into your min.

In this advert we can see a white background which helps to pull the audiences focus to the writing and picture of the artist Ed Sheeran who is holding a overly sized cat, the overly size cat is yet again relating to the abstract sense that has been used a lot in this genre folk rock. Ed Sheeran is quite new to the industry but his face is really recognisable so the audience dont need to see a picture of him to know who Ed Sheeran is as the name is so well known, the record compnay logo is different to the other advertisements as the logo is in plain sight in big view whereas the others are normally in the corner or bottom and very small.

CD Covers For My Genre

Here are three album covers that I looked at and analysed so that I have an better understanding of my genre.

All these CD covers have used relatively bright colours like white and blue, these seem to a often trend and is a convention of our chosen genre, this is what my group must take in mind when making our own CD cover and to try not to use any dark colours like black or grey. The text in every cover are all black for the track list so this is  a convention that I must try and follow.

Genre Research (Conventions)

During my research of my chose genre of Folk Rock/Indie Rock I hsve notice some strong conventions that are used in order to create a successful music video:

One of the first conventiions I noticed was that the videos have a lot of effects added to create a certain mood required in each video, I found an example in the video of Breakeven by The Script where a grey filter was added to make the scene more sad and depressing compared to the scene's with the woman in it where the colour is bright and colourful.

Another convention that is used is with a lot of lip syncing in these videos, there is very little in terms of the band performing form long shots or mid shots as there are a wide variety of close ups to show it up and close of the artist singing.

One convention is that the duration of the shots are very long compared to other genre's where the pace is very fast adn fat editing, an example of one is Ed Sheeran in Small Bump where there are only 5 shots used throughout the whole video, this short gif will show about a 1/4 of the whole long clip which lasts around 2mins.
Another convention within my genre is the clothing seems to be rather simple and could be related to everyday clothing like jeans, hoodie's or leather jackets, these are all related to the indie genre more then the folk but both are rather similar in the clothing area.

Genre Mood Board

Here is my mood board showing all different photo's that relate to my genre of Folk Rock. This will help build an image of this type when creating my own music video in terms of clothing and instruments used, also I have gathered the main colours that are used in this genre as they are not to bright and vibrant but instead quite simple like blues and blacks.

Theories (Bordwell & Thompson)

Bordwell and Thompson are a couple that studied way's of continuity editing and identified there are 4 ways of putting two clips together to create meaning, these are:

  • Spatial
  • Temporal
  • Graphic
  • Rythmic
Spatial
This form of editing is used to create a sense of spacial difference between the points of interest like people or significant objects. Normally an establishing shot is placed before another shot like a close up of a character, this is done to show the spacial distance between the characters and in which part of the environment they are in.
I have found an example of this in a music video of 'The Pretender' by 'The Foo Fighters', The first shot that is shown is of the space with the music instruments placed out with the vocalist walking out, after this we are shown a shot from behind him, without the shot before we would know who this is or the environmental he is located in, the third shot is a close up of his hand being wrapped in bandages, again without the previous clip we would not know who or what is happening.
Another effect that can be used is cross cutting as it can  help emphasis action taking place in completly separate places.

                                                      Temporal

Temporal is where two clips are put together to create a plot of a story, an example of this is with flashbacks or fast forwards to create a more in depth storyline or an enigma. Another way temporal is used is with  an ellipsis to cut out time that has no relation or significance to the story plot, this is done to help keep the audience engaged because if every time was shown like the character eating a whole meal or driving from one place to another it would waste the time of the audience as they don't want to watch all of that. An example of this in a music video is in 'Drive By' by 'Train' as in this first shot in the screen capture you can see the man driving his car in the country whereas in the shot before he was in the city, then in the second shot we are shown some gate like entrance which suggests to the audience that he is about to arrive at hi destination, in the third shot we are shown the girl standing on the balcony side, these three shots tell us that he has travelled to see her without the need of him narrating it to the camera.
Both temporal and spatial are not often used on music videos as they are more visual for making stories and meaning with a narrative.

Graphic

Graphic is where two shots are related by visual aspects, an example of this is graphic match where there is a cut from one object to another which both look visual the same in either shape or colour, this was used in the famous scene of psycho where the woman's eye is in centre frame then it cuts to the plug hole which both are round and dark in colour. Graphic continuity is where the centre of interest is constant through out cuts while maintaining lighting level or avoiding strong colour clashes. I found a music video where this is used in 'Gangnam style' by 'PSY' where the man is walking toward the camera then it cuts to th same shot but with the man in different clothing.

 Rythmic
This is where the cuts between shots are cut to a specific beat to create an atmosphere, an example of where this is done is often found in music videos to help keep the video to the tempo of the song, this is also done in trailers for films especially is horror trailers as they began off slow then get fast toward the end. I have found a horror trailer of 'Devil' which starts off slow then gets faster as the tension is built up.

Analysis low budget videos

These two low budget videos both use varies practical and editable techniques that help both of them to be successful music videos.
One of the tips I can gather form watching these videos are that the pace for the song and pace of editing must be in time to make it a successful video that goes with the song at the same tempo.
Another tip that I can use is that colours help to set the mood of a song for example in the A-ha! song the colours are very dark like black and red, this suits the mood as very dark and creepy.
A variety of camera shots are imported as well as the many close ups help to show objects in detail which have meaning to the lyrics at that specific time in a song, the long shots also help to show the environment which may relate tot eh mood or feelings of the song at the certain time of the song.
From watching both of these videos i have learnt that costume must be appropriate to the video for example in the fix's video they are all wearing matching clothing which help to make all of them look together actually like a boy band.

Conventions Of A Music Video

Rock video Analysis (Foo Fighters-The Pretenders)

Another main point within this video are the contrast between the band and the police, as the police are the authority as are naturally seen as the good people, however in this the audience feel different because we saw the band first and also the audience are familiar with the band and are instantly behind the band, the audience are therefore seen as rebellious which suits the tone and mood of the song.

Rock video Analysis (Biffy Clyro-The Captain)

Rock video Analysis (3 Doors Down-when You're Young)

pop video Analysis (Carly Rae Jepsen-Call Me Maybe)

Location

There are 3 main location in this video, the first is of the back garden and window where the girl is watching the man cut the grass, the second main location is on the front lawn where the girl is cleaning her car whilst the man is fixing his car in the front lawn next door to her, the last main location in the garage where most of the signing of the band is located, there is a sub location in her daydream where she is passed out form falling off the car where she and the man are together with a lighthouse and the sea in the background.

Clothes/probs

The girl in the video wears very casual clothes which young people would wear, the man wears a vest top and jeans which was used by the makers to help make the man seem more attractive  as that is the reason the girl is singing about him. There are no specific probs used, the main on's used are band equipment such as guitar and drums, there are other objects such as a lawn mower  or  car where also used in the video.

Cinematography/Effects

There are many long shots of the girl or the man in the distance from the other which was done by the makers  to help show the space between each other and that the man is taking no notice of the girl. There are also close ups of the girl singing and of the band , in the shots of her singing with the band the shot has been focus pulled onto her to blur the garage and band in the background, this is yo make her stand out from the rest of the surroundings. There are only two effects used, there is one when she falls off her car and bangs her head on the floor and then a ripple/fade is used to indicate to the audience that she has passed out from the knock, The second effect is a slight slow motion effect when the man is cutting the grass and taking his shirt off.

Narrative/Continuity

The girl is trying to get the boy’s attention who is cutting the grass and fixing the car, she does this by trying to clean the car erotically and then signs a song to him. There is a mix of continuity and montage footage as there is a criss cross between the storyline of the girl watching the man and cleaning the car being crossed with the scenes of the band playing in the garage then t the end they both meet up and match.
